How crippled is Apple Watch if you don't own an iPhone?

in other words, can use ipad, mac, else apple watch, or product useful purchase if have iphone?
 

possibly totally if must use iphone's (only) companion app initiate , if not use watch.

iPhone shuts down randomly, rst vdd_under
