"last" won't work

macmini 10.8.5. unix "last" command in terminal window supposed report out wtmp file, log of users have logged in. on particular machine, when invoke "last", get

"wtmp begins sat marc 14, 16:18", is, er, right now.

wtmp not logging, , evidently being reset whenever invoke last. what's going on? how work?

iPhone shuts down randomly, rst vdd_under
