Try on impressions from a naysayer

i'll preface saying i've made no secret of being unimpressed apple watch. based on keynotes, apple videos , recent reviews, i've been asking myself why thing exists. should mention i'm "watch guy." in last 5 years i've bought 3 rolexes, , last week, panerai. watches. though i'm not in love watch, planned buy 1 because work in product design/user experience , there's chance i'll have design watch someday.

anyway, went down michigan ave apple store in chicago today check watch out , try few on. first impression seeing under glass both models smaller thought. knew instantly 38mm going small (and have small wrists). seemed lot thinner though, looking down @ it. hard side. thing noticed right away how thin milanese loop looked. bummed out because that's 1 interested in.

start trying on 38mm milanese loop. absolutely hated band. felt so.. unsubstantial, cheap even, , feels unrelated watch. knew 38mm small. tried 42. while fit better, noticed watch thicker looked, , not way looked on wrist. design, while apple, seems totally wrong watch. honestly, if loved watch did, couldn't see myself wearing , glancing down @ other watches , admiring it.

thought ss white sports band looked nice, tried on. same thing.. didn't way looked. girl showed me space grey sport black band. 1 didn't bad. asked if thinner, , said no, color kind of makes seem way. on wrist, looked more.. complete other ones i'd tried on.

software, demo didn't let me sense how i'd use watch grabbed display model that's functional , tried demonstrate few things. tried 5 different times open message app demonstrate force touch , each time touched wrong app. zoomed way , still having problems. once got in there handed me try, did, , being 100% honest, didn't think great. found hard navigate, screen small able navigate touch, , digital crown wasn't easiest thing manipulate while on wrist.

so, i'm sure lot of write off these thoughts guy went in intending hate it, assure quite opposite. i'd have loved have changed mind it, after seeing in person , using it, can absolute not me. i'm in shock apple releasing thing way are. feels unlike them half assed. design seems wrong, interacting seems clumsy, , still don't understand need (other think cool have smart watch on our wrist, if don't know why).

if you're on fence, i'd pass - see if improve in future years. if you're sold haven't seen one, think should check out yourself, , if you're sold don't know 1 get. think space grey sport nicest of them all.

oh, , because i've had quite bit it, i'll more certainty before now: if spend $17k on edition version of this, have no regard money @ all. is, sport feels appropriately priced, watch seems overpriced, , edition complete joke thought be.

edit: oh , if you're wondering 38 vs 42.. have small wrists , 38 way small. 42 absolute sure.

anyway, flame away, discredit me, tell me i'm wrong. thoughts , i'm sticking 'em.

 

i had same exact feelings you. ordered space gray model, , while think looks great, experience took me ride. handed working demo, locked in display case , when told me try use messaging app, took me 3 tries before app opened (all watch did think doing force touch), , said press going reply. took me 4 tries before force touch "reply" came up. overall, dissatisfied experience , may return watch when comes want give chance , it. couldn't try on watch ordered (only sport had demo), interface hard use (maybe buggy software) take getting used too. i'm excited future of device, right now, can see why made order online only. wouldn't have stood in line it.
