2011 iMac hardrive failure, options?

my brother's imac desktop hard drive has failed. cleaned drive after seeing unfixable error. not able reinstall osx due error. thinking buying , installing new ssd. have built own pc , worked apple devices, don't think hardware issue, don't have original osx disk, , there isn't apple store within 3 hours of home. imac automatically partition space osx when detects fresh drive , able download osx via wifi?

imacs not automatically partition space os x when detect new drive. needs done purchase snow leopard ($20 online apple store), boot sl disc once new drive installed , format new drive mac os extended (journaled) guid partition. install sl on new drive, update sl 10.6.8 combo update , using mac app store download yosemite. if had backup restore up.
