thinking of upgrading 3 year old mid 2011 27inch imac base spec.
serious work hobbyist use of 2d , 3d applications: adobe cloud (premier, photoshop , lightroom), maya, modo, houdini, nuke, zbrush, mudbox, syntheyes, substance painter/designer. hobby use - not professional. imac runs of these (so macbook pro) noticeable uplift in compute power, @ times screen lag - , render times can enormous (e.g. 8 days 256 frame render of cgi scene did while ago in modo).
had pretty made mind refurb base spec nmp - £2119. seems price - , have enough peripherals me going (but need faster external storage). fact is transportable travel every weekend.
realised £1999 can rimac - less mac pro - or £2400 - more mac pro - can bump processor , graphic card. nice screen (probably no longer need drive 2nd screen), no transportability - have choose either have new of old imac me weeks/weekends.
applications have listed above, , bearing in mind wanted see performance improvement, not making money don't need ultimate uplift: nmp higher performer type of app on imac either base or upgraded?
biggest worry though both have amd cards - , (but not forever) opencl not supported cuda , better off nvida card. frustratingly worried giving dell £880 xps desktop me better performance , no hardware upgrades needed get: 24g of ram, , 2tb hard drive , 32g ssd nvidia geforce gtx 750ti 2gb ddr5. route cause me licensing issues (as of licences mac only) have target subset of applications need performance boost , move on windows. ever use machine few apps. may or may not involve additional software costs - depending on move over. have paid loads of money zbrush mac licence - performance not problem - don't need move it. modo candidate cross platform. use houdini apprentice want invest in houdini indie @ point - tied os need make choice. , on.
useful input mac user of applications run?
i've seen complaints rimac's performance gpu. wonder if running apps have, on such large , pixel dense display, not give performance hoping for.
