iPhone in hand to unlock?

weird story, bear me.

have 5s have yet unlock, owe at&t $50 final bill after switching t-mobile. bleh, know.

have friend lives out in france broke phone, , buying 5s. needs phone asap, , asked (begged) me ship out today. i'm going pay at&t they'll unlock phone, last time took around 24 hours confirm unlock. 2 years ago though, i'm not sure if still accurate.

question is- if submit unlock request today, , ship phone today, need phone physically in hand complete unlocking process?
 

no...once grant device unlock...it needs restored through itunes....
