transferring files

hello all. newbie here , none computer savvy. have imac purchased in june of 2007 , going replace new one. read online somewhere need f 440-800 or f800 cable/adapter transfer files , bookmarks. age of mac can tell me 1 should buy , need apple or can 1 big box or local store.

your imac should have both firewire 800 , 400 port. 800 1 third 1 right in picture below, , fastest, use one. can use fw800 cable, depending on computer you're going buy might need adapter new one. think you'll have go apple-made thunderbolt firewire adapter, if there other options i'm sure correct me. that's one:

assume "target disk mode" youre looking use, can read here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ph10725

if want transfer files 1 computer another, connect same wifi-network, or same router via ethernet cable, turn on file sharing , copy want old one.
