researchkit, apple's new open-source medical framework, 1 of unexpected announcements during company's spring forward media event. dr. stephen friend, 1 of key members of researchkit team, talked potential genesis of project in new interview fusion (via imore).

in september 2013, 1 , half years before researchkit unveiled, friend @ stanford's medx conference giving talk future of medical research. explained how envisioned open source system users upload medical data cloud researchers use in trials.

shortly after meeting o'reilly, friend started making frequent trips apple's hq in cupertino, meeting scientists , engineers. organized darpa-funded workshop exploring how biosensors potentially doctors , scientists understand parkinson's disease.

euan ashley, stanford university investigator behind myheart app, told fusion apple largely acted "facilitator", building researchkit framework in background researchers designed , built first researchkit apps themselves. however, apple did go meet u.s. food , drug administration 3 months before spring forward event talk medical research , smooth on potential regulatory concerns.

friend noted though open-source ideals didn't totally mesh apple's view on open source @ time, wanted work them rather competitors google , microsoft because apple hardware company doesn't need sell data, , believed apple when company said wouldn't @ data being used in researchkit.

however, both apple , friend decided not make true origin of researchkit clear fusion. it's unknown whether idea friend's or if apple developing before friend joined team.

far, researchkit has been success apple, receiving thousands of sign-ups less 24 hours after unveiled. in time frame, 11,000 people signed 1 of researchkit apps, myheart counts.
