Use an unlocked ATT iPhone 6 on T-Mobile?

hi all,

moved us-mexico border , switch t-mobile take advantage of free international data , texting when on mexico side. have att iphone 6 under contract , locked att network. visited t-mobile store today , informed me if cancel contract att , have them unlock phone, still not able take advantage of full speed of t-mobile lte network.

sounded strange me under impression att , t-mobile phones identical , work on same frequencies. can confirm information given correct?
