My 17" MBP has decided it wants to take eternity to start up?? any suggstions

help!
have mac book pro 17", yeah bit old, looked after. have not had problems it. have maverick installed. today playing trying log onto internet, went restart - prehistorically slow. grey screen appears apple logo , and booting bar underneath take hour boot password , login page. input password , try log in loading circle , beach-ball cursor , nothing happens.
restarted access ti disk utilities , fixed drive, nothing doing there, same thing happens. rebooted again , used panel install os system, again restarted , nothing!! hours on grey screen apple logo , booting bar, has stopped half way through.
got nothing now? can me??? please feel free email me? can't work , in real trouble!!
