re-initialize your internal drive help!!

i have mid 2010 mbp running lion. goal upgrade mountain lion. have been prescribed remedy:

if you're going upgrade, i'd suggest this:
1. clone existing drive using sd
2. boot clone
3. re-initialize internal drive
4. install clean copy of mountain lion, and...
5. .... when prompted, connect cloned backup , "migrate" accounts, apps, , settings.

question number 3. re-initialize internal drive??? steps , not or point n right direction. thx

they want boot disk utility, clone, , use erase computers hard disk.

boot recovery mode
( holding down command r or option command keys during boot or use usb key / cd
run disk utility tools ( don't install os x)
select hard disk left panel
click on erase
(or security erase if feel safer)
, let partition erase

erase main partition ( biggest one) if erase entire hard disk
wil erase diagnostic partitions or recovery petitions , want keep

once hard disk erased can reinstall mountain lion , copy clone back

rather run time machine, easier migrate clone of hard disk
