2012 Mac Mini / Yosemite still booting external HDD

hi

new these forums have 'hovered' around them ages... thought i'd better sign :d

2012 mac mini running yosemite still has niggles when comes external 3tb hdd (seagate)

use timemachine , general storage (ms word & excel files, email back-ups , itunes stuff etc...). main itunes account on mini's own hdd

external hdd every booted though mac mini asleep; i've googled many times , done suggestions (turned off power saving et al)

shut mini down, put sleep have bought & use jettison seems work 90% of time still... external hdd gets booted , when switch on mini sleep, it's not there , have unplug it/plug in running again (not ideal know)

further suggestions?! :)
