Volume Grayed out, PRAM reset wont work

hi guys

have had problem in past same mbp. reset pram, time not working. 2012 version mbp ran lion, mavericks running yosemite osx.

movies headphones have worked 1 day volume stopped working on mbp. worked when plugged in headphones, didnt come out of speakers.

tried reset pram few times recently, mbp struggled (sounded , felt awful) , start screen/grey screen kept flashing simultaneously.

other ideas?
 

external drive???

talking external hard drive?
