weird hard disk error - ideas?

first time happens - 2012 15" cmbp, disk in optibay (for years).

lots of repeated media not present messages finally

, 'disk not ejected properly' message.

ideas? backing bunch of vms external disk, failure in internal one.

failing hd, probably... how check that? working fine after reboot.
 

quite simply, system saying no longer physically locate drive holding "diamond xd" volume.

indicate problem drive, or cable connecting it, or connectors attaching it, or bus... failing drive start generate i/o errors rather "disappearing entirely", i'd more inclined blame leads.
