iMac Screen Very Dark when using TDM

i have 2015 13" mbp i've connected 2012 27" imac official apple thunderbolt cable , trying use target display mode. works, imac screen dark , keyboard buttons turn screen brightness don't have effect. can't seem find online.
 

unplugging cable, reconnecting it, , reenabling target display mode brought brightness slider back. weird.
