Need assistance with iMac, Snow Leopard to Yosemite

late 2009 27" imac, quad core i7, a1312, emc no. 2374

has generic fresh install of snow leopard 10.6.3 (from legitimate apple os x disc) . . . . due frustration @ not being able have way bootable yosemite usb stick.

if knew how, create bootable dvd yosemite installer, i've got installer dmg file dl dvds.

have late 2012 imac , have been using production platform.

. . . . . . late 2009 imac . . . . puzzled why imac not recognize bootable usb stick.

when execute cold boot 'c' key pressed. after prolonged grey screen, apple logo, defiantly goes straight desktop screen.

when use snow leopard disc , boot "recovery/installer" environment, disk utility see usb stick, i've re-done stick prior posting here, not have reason suspect stick bad.

please tell me how being complete moron , show me light. :)
 

i believe doing creating recovery partition, download installer on network. can try disk maker http://diskmakerx.com
drag , drop install os x yosemite installer app.
