Issues with Snow Leopard Software Update

i've run issues running software update on 2 separate computers trying run sl software update, , wondering if here has thoughts.

i'm installing sl retail dvds purchased directly apple-one sl client , other sl server. both shipped 10.6.3 on dvd.

first came installing sl server on core duo mini. did clean install on clean partition, hit software update(after doing regular server set-up). update downloaded apple fine, , given message needed restart. hit restart, , computer stalled @ blank desktop. there no progress bar or else. i've done fair share of software updates on every version of os x 10.2 10.10, , i'd never seen @ least extended period of time. left computer running overnight, , still stuck here. shut down computer via power button , started fine.

tried again, , attempted install updates stalled @ same place. after few cycles of gave up.

earlier evening, did clean install of sl client(again, 10.6.3 per markings on dvd) on macbook pro brand new, blank hard drive. hit software update. again, download updates i'm stuck @ blank desktop after hitting "restart". i've been sitting here hour looking @ it. cursor still "alive" it's not doing beyond that.

have computer set dual boot sl , mavericks, , able install mavericks updates fine.

thoughts on going on here?
