USB-C Compatibility?

this obvious people, cables of new usb-c devices (like usb-c iphone) compatible old usb-2 or 3 ports/hubs?
(or, if got iphone had cable usb-c, plug 2014 15" rmbp without having use adapter?)

second, old devices usb-2 or 3 able plug into/work usb-c hubs/ports?
(or, if have usb-2 or 3 thumb drive, able plug mac without adapter when new usb-c mac?)
 

all usb devices backwards compatible long have proper cable or adapter.
