few months ago upgraded 2011 i7 2.0ghz quadcore mbp, replacing optical 128gb ssd , buying 8gb of 1333mhz ram (about $250). upgrade wicked success , mac ran @ blistering pace. couple of weeks ago experienced gpu failure plague 2011 mbp's. bad, mac wouldn't boot , needed work files off of had shell out $250 guy reflow gpu (labour expensive in aus).
understand reflowing isn't permanent solution, i'm running gfxcardstatus , smcfancontrol showing running @ lower temperatures , i've disabled discrete gpu. im still cautious whether fail again did first time , because need work files makes me nervous.
plan running 100% right quite throw on ebay, looking @ sold items mbp same model similar upgrades go between $1000-1500. therefore cut losses on 1 , maybe little added put directly brand new 13" mbp retina 128gb ($1500) benefit increased portability.
way no longer have 1 liability , have last minimum of 3 more years. have 1tb usb 3.0 hard drive use store larger files.
main q's
1 - see significant performance change going ivy bridge i7 quadcore i5 haswell dualcore? dont use graphics intense apps (just logic pro , office)
2 - if continue run current setup discrete gpu disabled , monitoring temp... chances of having relapse? 4yr old technology makes me edgy.
upgrade or not?
dudes
currently you've sandy bridge quad core. ivy bridge mid-2012.
haswell dual-core less powerful.
if continue current setup, it'll still fail, because heat cpu affect gpu's solder joints (they're in same area) , when solder fails, won't boot @ all.
logic pro multithreaded. i'd recommend baseline 15" rmbp instead.
i have external monitor (nec pa271w) has custom calibrated profile. problem i'm having whenever i'm on safari , use magic trackpad go previous page colors off while page reloads. once it's loaded colors go custom profile. after lot of reading found out if set system preferences - display - color srgb iec61966-2.1 colors match , page reloads faster. here's example of i'm seeing while go 2 finger gesture. issue happens using coverflow in finder. has experienced same issues on external monitor? driving me crazy Forums Macs Mac Accessories iPhone Mac OS & System Software iPad Apple Watch Notebooks iTunes Apple ID iCloud Desktop Computers Apple Music Professional Applications iPod iWork Apple TV iLife Wireless
okay, know how battery cycles , work. want know is: how many cycles battery has how old battery is how many mah macbook shipped with how many mah have now reading thread on different site macbook batteries , commenting battery info. of them commenting saying reached 120 cycles per year. 1 guy said mac 3 years old on 250 cycles (avg. 83 year). think person had 400 after 2 years. in 'system information' says age of macbook 3 months old (when arrived said 1 months old, i've had 2 months) , have 98 cycles, using many cycles? i'm asking because realised apple batteries more or less useless @ holding charge after 1000 cycles , if i'm averaging 100 every 2 months gives me 1.7 years until macbook more or less desktop... to me seems poor previous windows laptops owned lasted long , expect lot more machine on £1k. (i have been told batteries in newer macbooks glued in place , replacing battery hard job , cost lots of money, mistake...
i have mbp 17 2010, equipped vertex 2 ssd 120gb boot disk. it's old hardware don't want change it, problem ssd performing poorly : ssd health report not bad (except temperature, dont understand) : sata link looks ok : efi version latest : speed, write speed, quite half of vertex 2 public benchmarks. ? rododendro said: ↑ i have mbp 17 2010, equipped vertex 2 ssd 120gb boot disk. it's old hardware don't want change it, problem ssd performing poorly : speed, write speed, quite half of vertex 2 public benchmarks. ? click expand... did ssd slow down on time, or first time tested it? of ocz ssds era used sandforce controller, uses compression techniques achieve it's advertised performance. blackmagic speed test (and many real world applications) use binary/incompressib...
