OS X vs Windows - productivity performance

i've been mac user couple of years , got os x mountain lion. in fact, first os x machine hackintosh (before got first mac, 2011 imac). remember how os x seemed faster windows in tasks (photoshop, sketchbook). didn't run benchmarks or anything, subjectively felt faster , system didn't have these big lags windows did. assumed os x better performer - , loved else well. and, besides, wasn't performance anyway - liked system more , long run @ least fast windows, rather use os x. became mac enthusiast , since bought 3 macs.

however, recently, installed bootcamp pc programs , put photoshop on , while things equally fast in os x, things felt smoother on windows, moving large layers or groups of layers move tool, reason stutters on mac (before tried on windows, assumed that's how photoshop works). , it's not photoshop - little things seem faster in windows (i wrong, though): while evernote sure looks prettier on os x, scrolling through notes large photos lags bit more windows version.

also, since yosemite lags here , there on retina imac , macbook pro, assumed graphical requirements of retina displays steep current hardware, , don't mind occasional stutter. imagine surprise when found out windows 8 runs butter. granted, resolution "only" 4k (maximum windows/bootcamp @ moment) , arguably windows has less animations, effects , transitions, still - everything, resizing windows opening fancy start menu smoother , didn't seem strain hardware @ all.

now, know lot of people critical of yosemite performance , i'm sure there's lot of fine-tuning , fixing apple do. question is, basically, not latest os x os x in general. assuming apple sorts out bugs , smooths out performance it's on par mavericks or mountain lion, os x fast windows tasks photoshop, illustrator or zbrush - or paying sort of "beauty tax"?

please note these performance estimates that: estimates. personal , subjective. quite possible things run fast, maybe faster, , pay more attention detail on os x.

hear thoughts on this, please, no hyperboles :) know people claim yosemite million times slower mavericks million times slower ml, broken , apple cares iphones, etc. said, let's assume apple iron out bugs , issues, , talk os x in general. best choice photoshop , similar apps/workflows?

to honest, never observed myself when switched. mind, windows fast on brand-new mac. animations smooth, applications launched quickly. think surprises faster boot times on leopard , snow leopard opposed windows vista. contrast, games ran poorly on os x. games windows , os x versions ran noticeably better on bootcamp.

@ point, however, know 2008 macbook isn’t quite capable of running yosemite anymore, in fact, not lion was. run snow leopard on external drive , difference stunning. feels more lightweight, never seems stutter (i used flick between windows exposé, mission control, @ least now, stutters). wonder whether has more hardware or whether os x has indeed become lot heavier. feels ‘beauty tax’ @ point.

whether os x remains best choice photoshop , other professional applications difficult answer. i’d depend on trying out system. know os x had more effective , logical workflow me spaces, exposé, dock, quick look, easier drag’n’drop, simpler finder. i’m running windows 10 on old laptop , can microsoft has caught on (now ‘spaces’ , exposé), me still doesn’t have same flow os x.
