Need Help Testing Hard Drive!

i have been running bit of odd issue g5. running os x leopard , applications began stop working software update , other core service applications. proceeded try , repair both volume , permissions in disk utility met "underlying task reported failure" described here.

figured erase , install since steps in article did not anything. booted off leopard 10.5.4 disk, went disk utility, , erased whole hard drive 0 out data. reloaded os x leopard , seemed well. got 10.5.8 , began reload applications , data.

went install iwork , ilife , met odd error. stating programs open though iwork , ilife never installed. installed office 2008 , wanted update it, sp1 update says use 8 kb of disk space , never installs. can repair permissions , volume normal in disk utility.

question is, sound hard drive failure though testing software (smart utility, apple service diagnostics, etc) report fine? there free hard drive testing software highly recommends? drive in question 1 tb western digital caviar blue 4,503 hours on it. maybe coincidence , should erase , install again?

thats low hours failing already. i'm not on testing beyond have when comes programs , checking smart status. can think of 1 more thing try- put hard drive in windows machine.

or better yet- put hard drive in external case , have computer format , load data onto , try using in different setting. if still fails know hard drive has died prematurely.

edit: low hours on drive- hard drive in 2009 imac has 28,872 power on hours on it. no issues :)
