Reliability between external HDD and thumb drive?

i've read thumb drives aren't reliable. true?

external hdds more reliable, though have many more components , moving parts?

feel large thumb drive less reliable use backup drive external hard drive (for example) typical wd mypassport ultra?
 

very true. don't want use usb key backup. memory chips , controllers in tend of low quality.

have seen higher end usb keys supposedly use better quality components, pricing ends in ssd territory, value proposition not there.
