Selling an old MacBook Pro - best practice for wiping drive and reseting machine?

selling c2d mbp, on ebay. recommend best way reset prior sale, , share other advice best state leave in new owner? concerned wiping personal data, in convenient state new owner.
instance is running mac os x 10.7, older machine this, might better left new owner decide if want upgrade?
also, have verified hard disc disc utility , says ok - them machine has 6 year old physical drive - there easy tests can double check not selling unit problems, @ least in short term?
