Help! I can't boot

hi.

have big problem.
i've wanted update macbook pro app store system updates (i can't remember which)

when update began looked fine. when said "less 1 minute remaning" froze. waited 3-4 hours nothing happend. i've read on several forums other people had same problems, , had force shutdown mac. did (knowing have potential risks). , did.

after force shutdown, wanted start mac again. screen apple logo , procesbar appeared usual, before reaching half way, screen started flickering , mac froze again.

tried boot in safe mode, couldn't.
can boot in single user mode , in startup manager.

thing is, have files on mac, means alot. there small chance somehow file copied external drive or something??? really hope can me.
doesn't matter if mac works afterwards, want files.

please me.

to files off of mac if won't boot, need either have bootable os x usb drive, or can try target disk mode (https://support.apple.com/kb/ph10725?locale=en_us)

boot recovery(cmd +r), go disk utility, verify disk, if necessary, repair disk, repair disk permissions well(i have seen lots of disk permissions issues os x update failures), attempt reboot after completing these steps, if worked computer take few minutes complete initial update/upgrade.

if doesn't work can go recovery, , click reinstall os x. typically not delete documents or files, reinstall os x components. ideally mac , running @ point, files intact. if doesn't resolve may need erase , reinstall(https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht201376), keep in mind wipe data off disk.
