hey, i'm on 2011 mac mini , using synology ds413 nas 4 3tb wd reds storage. i'll switching 5k retina imac soon, thought time rethink storage situation , potentially utilize thunderbolt 2 storage options 5k imac offers.
1. which thunderbolt box? using finder browse files on nas slooooooowwww. speed important factor of local storage , don't know first thing thunderbolt boxes, hoping can point me in right direction. friend mentioned pegasus2 - best choice 5k imac it's thunderbolt 2? want @ least 4 bays. edit: did search , found akitio thunder2 quad , owc thunderbay 4 #toomanyoptions !
2. wd red drives aren't on pegasus2 compatibility chart - don't see major issue though - safe reuse them in it? hate buy 4 new drives when these working fine.
3. third scenario potentially use mac mini nas server - alleviate finder / afp slowness coming mac, how connect 4 wd red drives?
thanks!
*** more info slow nas performance if thinks can help! ***
nas great in parts - love os , synology apps, i'm struggling put unreliable afp issues. browsing through file directories tedious - it'll fine & take few seconds of time takes 30 seconds load file lists, , hangs there minutes no progress.
dragging mp3 stored on nas ableton live on mac (audio software) take 30-40 seconds import (while freezing ui) whereas if drag in locally stored mp3 - isn't ssd - takes 2 seconds. what's weird though can handle streaming , transcoding plex 2 tv's in 720p flawlessly.
i've tried connecting via smb, cifs + afp... have tried both wireless , gigabit ethernet cable (yes, router gigabit too). no improvements.
the pegasus2 no longer available in diskless configuration, cannot reuse wd reds have.
personally, recommend thunderbay 4 raid edition. it's solid enclosure , fast.
