Ejecting HDMI?

whenever pull hdmi chord it says disk improperly ejected. ive assumed external hdd cable glitching out. time looking @ external hd , light never blinked @ all.. disk ejected improperly error came right in sync pulling hdmi chord out.

aware needed eject hdmi, ive been yanking out year. how eject it? important?
